Winter gardens and roof gardens

Winter gardens are gaining the popularity. Once this direction was more like a green house with exotics. Now, winter gardens - is an additional area of rooms, terraces, furnished with the latest design. The libraries and rooms of relaxation and recreation room with TV, furniture and plants can be placed here. And sometimes winter gardens - this is an additional opportunity to block, for example, view at the neighbor's site. This is especially true in the areas with a strong difference in altitude. Imagine you go out to the terrace and the neighbors are at the lower level. You feel uncomfortable, as well as they are. And in such cases winter gardens come to the rescue. We do not just once have to think about this garden for that reason. And always the result is higher of expectations. It's beautiful and prestigious, but it is a very difficult and important task to do the project, communication, and create conditions for people and plants. Only professionals may solve this task. Investing the money, the Customer must have a warranty on materials and labor. The garden shall be aesthetically pleasing and be the pride of the owners.

Roof gardens are not less interesting and less complicated. The ability to create such a garden depends primarily on the design of the building where you plan to locate the garden. It is important to calculate the loads on the structure. It is better if building, house, for example, were designed with a garden, then there will be no problems. Thus, the roof slope, and other requirements are taken into account. The most famous historical example of a roof garden - the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon (Babylon Gardens). Even in those early days Nebuchadnezzar II was able to realize the dream of creating unusual gardens, the watering of plants and gardens of which was thought over, which became the prototype of the gardens on the roof.

The construction of a roof garden faces several challenges, in particular, the need for a consistently high level of humidity, heavy loads, both from the soil and from the plants themselves. There is also a risk of damage of roofing material by the plants’ roots. Typical design of the roof “cake” for the installation of the roof garden is the following:

                       1) operational layer (soil substrate and paving);

                        2) filter layer;

                        3) drainage;

                        4) anti-root layer;

                        5) structural elements of the building roof.

A special filter layer (geotextile) which prevents root penetration in the lower layer is laid under a layer of soil substrate. And the drainage layer, such as of coarse gravel or expanded perlite, which serves for draining of the water formed in the watered plants, is put lower.

“Green roofs” can be performed not only by the inversion, but also by the traditional version. There is even the view that the traditional version is better for winter conditions. The soil can completely cover the whole “green” roof. However, the soil may be in special containers - florist, containers, and barrels. This reduces construction costs and provides greater protection of the roof from the biological damages.
In today's gardens on the roofs the layer of soil, which is known to have considerable weight, is often replaced by a special layer of soil of artificial substrate, which absorbs and stores moisture easier.

Gardening of the “green roofs” should be realized only by the varieties of plants specifically bred for this purpose (the so-called sponge-like roots). The plant pits or shafts, which are placed inside the attic (or technical floor), can be established for planting large plants. This makes it possible to provide heating if necessary, of the root system, leaving the plants to winter on the roof.

The benefits of gardens on the roof are obvious. Green areas on the roof can regulate the temperature of the heating of the roof (because in summer the temperatures of the cover heating can reach 80 degrees Celsius), as well as help to achieve sound insulation, dust absorption and many other useful things, as, for example, create additional habitat for birds.

Green roofs - new recreational areas, solariums, outdoor cafes in the best traditions, and finally mini-parks, the realm of harmony and peace-building, arranged, for example, according to feng shui, and including fountains, rockeries, alpine hills and scenic rock garden.

How will the roof look like – it depends on the willingness of the Customer, fantasy of the landscape architect, and their full cooperation.
